Everything You Need To Know About Depression by Eleanor H. Ayer. NY: The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc., 1997. This is an easy-to-read, informative book about depression. It makes a good starting place to learn more without needing to wade through a lot of technical jargon.
Book Darkness Visible by William Styron. NY: Random House, 1990. This book contains a personal account of the author's battle with depression written very directly and honestly, a style not found in many books. It is a commendable effort to describe a disease not truly understood by many who have never experienced depression in its severe form.

alt.support.depression is a newsgroup for those who suffer from any form of depression, as well as those who would like to learn more. This FAQ contains a lot of information about depression, treatments, and additional resources of information and support.

A FAQ for the alt.support.depression.manic newsgroup and the soc.support.depression.manic newsgroup which discusses bipolar disorder, as well as other mood disorders, with a focus on those involving mood swings.
